Gone to Pot
his porcelain vase has a black-and-white underglaze, underglaze pencil stripes, and 22-karat gold luster. Maker Susan Hanft is ?strongly attracted to graphic black-and-white designs. Stripes are about as basic as it gets when it comes to black and white, and yet they have so many associations, from prison to punk to psychedelia.?
Susan creates the vase by using paper templates to cut clay slabs. The vase is bisque-fired and decorated. A clear liner glaze is fired on the interior and 22-karat bright gold luster is added to the rim in a third, low-temperature, firing. The inside glaze protects against water leaking.
